4 Ways to Get Server Certification

azure certification pluralsight

If you're considering a career in network administration, server certification may be in your future. CompTIA Server+ is not all you will need. You'll also need to be able to troubleshoot cloud, virtualization and server problems. You might also consider pursuing additional certifications as your resume grows. Network administrator certifications, while they are generally building blocks, can often be used as a pre-requisite to more advanced certifications. Keep up-to date by training yourself and continuing to earn more certificates.

CompTIA Server+

If you are an IT professional or aspire to become one, consider taking the CompTIA Server+ server certification. Multiple-choice questions are based on networking concepts. The exam is 90 minutes long and requires general knowledge and skills. Candidates must be familiar with network concepts, including hardware and software. Advanced topics like storage and disaster recovery are covered as well.

Windows Server 2012

You must earn the Windows Certified Solutions Associate certificate (MCSA) to demonstrate that you understand Windows Server 2012 in its basics. The MCSA exam covers the main features of Windows Server 2012 and the associated technologies. For those who want to obtain further certifications in desktop security and server infrastructure, this certification is necessary. This certification requires you to pass the following exams: 70-411 (MCSA), MCSE: Server Infrastructure, and the MCSA: Desktop Security.

SecureW2

SecureW2 certification of servers can make your network more secure. Although it is possible to create your own PKI or certificate authorities, it is much more difficult than you might imagine. A private CA that isn't properly configured or has expired can make your network vulnerable. SecureW2 makes it possible to integrate any SAML/LDAP identity provider within your system. SecureW2 also allows you to easily create custom certificates and policies.

RADIUS

A server certificate will be required to set up a Radius server. The server should have a PKCS12 certificate file that contains the private key and server's certificate. It is better to buy certificates from an established CA than to make your own. You'll then need to distribute your certificate to clients.

RADIUS server certificates

RADIUS servers require a digital certificate for authentication purposes. The certificate consists of two parts: the server's cert and the private key. It also contains all the certificates necessary to establish trust chains. You can generate a self-signed certificate or buy one from a popular CA. No matter what option you choose to use, it is important that all RADIUS clients have the same certificate. While creating a self signed certificate is the best way to secure your network, there are some important things to consider.

SSL certificates

When a webserver requests a connection, it sends a digitally sign acknowledgment and an SSL Certificate to the client. The browser validates the certificate's validity by comparing it to a trusted CA list. Once the browser has verified the certificate, it creates an encrypted symmetric key called a "session key" and encrypts it using the server's public keys. When a client requests connection, the webserver responds with a "server hello” message that includes its private key, session ID and public key. The session will begin once both parties have confirmed that the SSL certificate was valid.

Multi-domain wildcard certificate

A multi-domain wildcard certificate has the advantage that you can use one security certificate across multiple domains. Unfortunately, each certificate must be renewed separately. This can result in insecure warnings being displayed by browsers. Multi-domain wildcard certs can simplify management and save money. CASC is now the Public Key Infrastructure Consortium.
